OVERVIEW

Canary
— A Visual Chronicle of the 2019 Hong Kong Protests

"Canary" is a conceptual magazine created to illuminate the 2019 Hong Kong protests. As the designer behind this project, I combined bold illustrations with compelling narratives to capture the socio-political challenges faced by Hong Kong. My mission was to craft a visually engaging and empathetic narrative that not only informs but also resonates globally—demonstrating my ability to blend graphic design with purposeful storytelling.

Design Choices
— The Power of Black, White, and Yellow

To mirror the protest’s visual identity, I selected a stark color palette:

Black & White
These colors convey urgency and gravity, reflecting the intense reality of the protests.

Yellow
Introduced as a symbol of hope and resilience, yellow adds an element of optimism amidst conflict. Each illustration was meticulously designed with symbolic meaning, addressing the complex socio-political themes while remaining visually striking.

Challenges & Solutions
— Balancing Sensitivity and Impact

Depicting a sensitive political climate required a careful balance: I needed to maintain factual accuracy without diminishing visual engagement. To achieve this, I conducted extensive research to inform each illustration’s symbolism, ensuring authenticity while respecting diverse perspectives. This research-driven approach allowed me to deliver impactful visuals that communicate both the harsh realities and the underlying hope of the movement.

Showcase
— Bringing the Narrative to Life

Featured in the ‘Globalization Has Faltered’ article, this illustration depicts eyes whose pupils are shaped like globes, each looking in a different direction. By subverting the natural alignment of the pupils, I aimed to symbolize a world that no longer shares a unified perspective—reflecting the growing divergence in how nations and individuals see global events.

Conclusion & Key Learnings
— The Power of Visual Storytelling

Working on "Canary" reinforced the transformative role of visual storytelling in social commentary. I discovered that in-depth research, empathetic design, and carefully considered symbolism are crucial in shaping narratives that resonate on both an emotional and intellectual level. This project not only deepened my commitment to responsible design but also showcased my ability to create visually compelling work that informs and inspires—a qualities I am eager to bring to a mid-level graphic design role.
